UPDATE: Bishop Bypass Project Continues

OCONEE– The passage of a bill (Georgia Senate Bill 346) could have a direct effect on Oconee County residents.

If passed, the bill would allow for most state and local transportation projects to avoid current state environmental protections.

This would directly influence the plans for the proposed Bishop Bypass. If built as planned, the Bypass will affect historic farms, wetlands, and archeological sites in the area. President of the Oconee Historic Society , Tali Stone says there might still be a route that can save the history of the area.

” It’s too little too late, but if the bill passed I still think they can find a route that doesn’t ruin our history.”

The bill is currently in the Georgia House of Representatives.

We will continue to update you on this story.
