Georgia Women’s Tennis Finishes Regular Season Undefeated, SEC Champions

The University of Georgia women’s tennis team is the regular season 2019 Southeastern Conference Champion. The Bulldogs clinched the championship at home with a 4-0 win over Kentucky, giving them their ninth-straight shutout.

“To win this championship here in front of our home crowd was really great,” head coach Jeff Wallace said. “These fans here in Athens have been awesome all year for us.”

The win this weekend gave the Bulldogs their 10th regular season SEC Championship in program history. The last conference championship came for the Bulldogs in 2013.

Even though second-ranked Georgia earned the trophy on Friday, they had one last regular season match against Vanderbilt on Sunday. The Bulldogs won 4-1, giving them their second undefeated season in program history.

The Bulldogs finished the season with a 21-0 record, 13-0 SEC. The last time the team went undefeated was 2002.

This Georgia team is no stranger to success, as they already won the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Indoor Championship earlier this season. However, Wallace said he still thinks the team has more potential.

“We’ve really come a long way in a lot of areas,” Wallace said. “But I still feel like we can get better in areas, too.”

The Bulldogs will travel to College Station, Texas, for the SEC Tournament this weekend. As the top overall seed in the conference, UGA receives a double-bye and will play on Friday against the winner of Alabama versus LSU.

Freshman Meg Kowalski helped guide the Bulldogs to the championship win over Kentucky with a 6-0 doubles win. She said being part of this team is something she’ll never forget.

“It’s definitely incredible,” Kowalski said. “This is definitely an amazing year, and we’re not done yet. I want to keep it going, but you can’t ask for anything more than this.”
