Georgia Senate Bill to Protect LGBTQ Community

ATHENS, Ga.—Some Athens residents are speaking up about a newly introduced state senate bill that – if passed – could have a big impact on the LGBTQ community. Senate Bill 119, also called the ‘Georgia Civil Rights For All’ bill, would create full protections in public accommodations for LGBTQ individuals. The bill was introduced in the state legislature in an effort to extend protections to LGBTQ individuals. The state currently has no laws prohibiting discrimination against them. Athens for Everyone Endorses Barksdale

Local activist group Athens for Everyone has endorsed candidate Jim Barksdale for Georgia Senate. President Tim Denson, speaking on behalf of the group, said that he agrees with Barksdale’s stances on environmental issues, women’s health, and living wages. “We believe Jim Barksdale is the best path to bring about a progressive Georgia,” said Denson. Citizens stand in support of Living Wage Policy

That was because dozens of citizens were present to voice their opinions about an Athens-Clarke County Living Wage Policy for city-county workers. “Just because part time employees are given less hours, does not mean their work is valued less,” said Tim Denson, president of Athens For Everyone.
