Investigation Update: Barrow County Deadly Plane Crash

UPDATE 3/2 10:23 p.m. – A preliminary report released Thursday into a plane crash that killed two people last month in Barrow County reveals “no evidence of any inflight structural failure.” The report from the National Transportation Safety Board adds that the NTSB is still in possession of the wreckage for further examination. The report adds that student pilot Shannon Ewing and flight instructor Henry Ewing were killed after takeoff on February 16, 2017. Fighting the Drought: New Plans for Water Recycling

New water recycling plans approved by the Athens-Clarke County Commission could potentially lower drought probability to almost 0% according to an assessment presented by the public works department in January. The assessment determined the existing drought resilience of Clarke County and created solutions for the county to become more water efficient in the future. Machines Saving Lives: Taking Cardiac Emergency Aid to the Next Level

Barrow, Ga.- Barrow County Emergency Service’s (EMS) new team member isn’t human – it’s a machine. The department has purchased seven LUCASä2 automatic chest compression devices to give patients improved odds of survival in a cardiac emergency. The machines provide automatic continuous CPR for patients in cardiac arrest. EMS Capt. Oconee County Fire Department Wants New Gear

One local fire department hopes to improve the safety of its volunteers in order to improve the chances of saving lives. The Oconee County Fire and Rescue Department is asking for more than $150,000 in extra funds, to update some of their breathing devices. Youth Soccer Treasurer Arrested for Theft

According to a Barrow County Sheriff’s release, 35 year old Chanin Watkins of Bethlehem was arrested today for 26 counts of theft by taking. The sheriff’s department was able to determine that Watkins unlawfully obtained $56,000 in funds from the Barrow County Youth Soccer Association, after a detailed investigation. She obtained the funds while acting as the youth soccer associations treasurer from June 2015 to March 2016. Watkins is currently in the Barrow County Detention Center awaiting a bond.

                – 38 year old John Martin The GBI is investigating a deputy involved shooting in Oconee County. The Oconee County Sheriff’s Department says one of its officers shot 38 year old family violence suspect John Martin around 10 PM last night. No Foul Play suspected for Dead Inmate

No foul play suspected in the death of a 39 year old Barrow County inmate Jonathan Manus. That’s the word tonight from Georgia Bureau of Investigation agents looking into the death of the inmate. Deputies found 39-year old Jonathan Manus inconscious in his cell at the Barrow County Detention Center.  Deputies alerted medical personenl and Manus was taken to a a local hospital where he was treated for an unspecified ailment.
