Athens, GA – The University of Georgia is one of the many colleges joining the “It’s On Us” campaign. The White House-initiated campaign looks to assist in preventing sexual assaults in the community.

This week, which UGA calls Week of Action, the university is offering a number of activities like bystander training programs to teach a hands-on approach to solving this prolific issue.

UGA students made a public service announcement to combat sexual assault. This year alone, students have reported 61 rapes.

Though people may not always hear about every sexual assault case, National Campaign Manager Kristin Avery advises, “When you see something happening, actually get involved and try to prevent it from happening.”

Madison Turner is one of the masterminds behind UGA’s Week of Action. She had to step in one night downtown when she saw a guy pressure a girl into going home with him. She offered the girl a ride home.

“It was a liberating feeling to know that I was able to step in and make a real difference,” says Turner.

She hopes others are inspired to make a difference too.
