ATHENS- The third biggest event in downtown Athens is happening this weekend. The Twilight bike race is a 35 year tradition that happens during the last weekend in April. Reporter Taylor Bisciotti tells us that tens of thousands of people are expected to come.
About 40,000 people gather downtown for Twilight, making it the third biggest event behind UGA football games and a three-day music festival called AthFest, says Director of Downtown Development Authority Pamela Thompson.
But unlike game days and AthFest, several streets will be closed off, bars are open all day and people can walk around with open containers. Both bars and restaurants look forward to the event as it increases their sales. The Silver Dollar Bar manager, Gabe Pica, says that Twilight weekend sales increase over 100% compared to a normal non-gameday weekend.
