Teal Is The New Black: Sexual Assault Awareness Marked on UGA Campus

Students at The University of Georgia will take the pledge to become an active bystander by pinning a ribbon to their chest this Tuesday in support of sexual assault awareness month.

College students are one of the most vulnerable age groups when it comes to sexual assault. According to the Association of American Universities, one out of four students will experience sexual assault during their four years in school. On a campus like Georgia that’s roughly 8,750 victims out of 35,000 students.

Sexual assault awareness isn’t limited to April or Athens. From the It’s On Us campaign to Lady Gaga’s oscar performance, the topic has gained national attention. The University’s Relationship and Sexual Prevention Violence group (RSVP) adds to the conversation today through it’s campaign, teal is the new black.

Teal, associated with emotional repair, is the official color of the national initiative that is working to end sexual assault. While the ribbons will be on campus Tuesday, RSVP is holding events all week to promote preventing sexual assault.
