Fire Up the Hydrants: Art to Don Athens Hydrants

The fire hydrants in downtown Athens are getting more color. Twenty hydrants are being painted by artists to celebrate 80 years of drinking water delivery service to Athens.

Artist Jamie Calkin, also known for his mural in Tate Student Center, is one of the artists selected. His hydrant is at the corner of Lumpkin and Broad Street.

The Athens-Clarke County Water Conservation Office released a map for a 2 mile walk that will take you past each hydrant. If the walk is completed twice, for a total of 4 miles, you will be walking the average distance that a person in a developing country walks for their water.

The artist have until September 30th to complete their painting and all of the hydrants will be unveiled on October 8th.
