As the coronavirus continues to spread, schools across the world have been trying to come up with safe ways they can give seniors a proper graduation, whether that means postponing the ceremony or coming up with a virtual one. The University of Georgia has canceled the 2020 Spring graduation ceremony due to the virus.

Soon after the news broke, two UGA students came across an idea from a Japanese elementary school that hosted a virtual graduation on Minecraft. Ivan Campbell, a junior psychology major, and Nick Miller, a senior biology major at UGA, partnered with 30 people after pitching this idea to Reddit.

The group is in the process of creating a virtual Sanford Stadium and Tate Student Center on Minecraft. Everything will be complete by the end of April, Campbell hopes, and they plan on hosting the ceremony on May 8, just like UGA had originally planned.

All students have to do is download Minecraft onto their devices at home and then create an account and login on May 8 for the ceremony.

Campbell is looking forward to the UGA community coming together and hopes this gives seniors something to look forward to. Despite being online, Campbell said he hopes to have a guest speaker lined up for the ceremony.

“My end goal would be if we could have Jere Morehead come in and maybe say a few words,” he said.

Kevin Keneely is a senior majoring in journalism in the Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication at the University of Georgia.
