Athens Project Homeless Connect

Athens, G.A.—Katie Smith is the Shelter Director at the Athens Area Homeless Shelter. They aren’t giving food or clothes at tomorrow’s event. They will give something perhaps a little more valuable.

“We’re going to focus on our financial education piece and offer budgeting and educational information on savings accounts and how to get out of debt,” states Katie Smith.

Shoes, clothes, and bus passes. These are a few of the items that will be given out tomorrow afternoon at the Athens Project Homeless Connect at the First United Methodist Church in Athens.

“It’s a one day program that will connect people with resources,” says Katie.

Last year more than 300 people attended Homeless Connect.

“There will be lots of groups from all around Athens working together. Our goal is to have all these resources available in one location,” explains Katie.

Katie says there will be moms from the Athens Homeless shelter that will attend tomorrow’s event.

“Some moms haven’t gotten donations of coats in their kid’s sizes. They go down tomorrow to look through the coats to see if there are coats in their kid’s sizes. If not, we’ll keep on looking,” states Katie.

And with some help, they will find those coats.
