ATHENS – East Precinct Commander Mike Hunsinger thinks the unchanged number of calls to the Athens-Clarke County Police Department is only “the calm before the storm.”
“Everybody is concerned that the streets remain safe,” he says.
What may likely occur are slick roads and power outages caused by the impending icy conditions, which are expected to begin later on tonight.
Assistant Chief Fred Stephens says that although this is the case, “we’ve prepared throughout the government.”
The Police Department works closely with Public Works to report dangerous areas around town. Stephens says the Lexington Highway area by the border of Oglethorpe County and the GA 10 Outer Loop by Milledge Avenue have a tendency to be icy because of the shade.
Athens-Clarke County government held preparedness meetings to get ready for the ice events. But who can predict the weather is the thousand dollar question.
For now, ACC PD cautions drivers to stay off the roads if you do not have to travel.
