The Athens Urban Wildlife Project is a relatively small project here in Athens that’s part of a much larger organization. It works to keep track of local wildlife behaviors, in response to urbanization as a part of the Urban Wildlife Information Network.
Locally, the project strives to involve citizen volunteers as well as student undergraduates in its work in order to keep young people and local community members aware and interested in their local wildlife.
Reese Brown, the project’s current undergraduate coordinator, recently won the UGA Sustainability Grant to implement AI-audio recognition equipment into the trail cameras used by the project. This will help them categorize more animals and provide better data than before.
Ian Wyles is a senior majoring in journalism at the University of Georgia.
