Board of Education Representative Linda Davis Brings Corporate Skills into the Classroom

Linda Davis is the District 3 Representative for the Athens Clarke-County School Board of Education, and even though serving on the board can be a full-time commitment, Davis’ work does not stop there.

Davis is active in civic and community efforts such as the Athens-Clarke Heritage Foundation, Envision Athens Steering Committee and the West Broad Feasibility Study Initiative. Davis also serves on the Evaluation of the Superintendent Committee, and she is the vice chair of the Policy Committee for the school board.

For 38 years, Davis worked in the telecommunications industry for Bell South, and through those years, she saw how the company was able to transform using different mechanisms to adjust in the industry.

Davis said she uses the skills she learned in the corporate world and incorporates them in her work for the school board. She believes if schools used those same restructuring systems that it could transform the way we teach, the way we educate, and the way students learn.

Davis said she always knew she was going to be in education because education was prized in her family. Her mother and aunts were all teachers.

As Davis has been on these boards, she said she’s also been a huge advocate for the use of measurements. Measuring the success of specific programs allows the business to determine if they are necessary, according to Davis.

Davis said she hopes to retire soon to let some the parents who have children in the school system step in and fill her position.
