A winner will be crowned later today involving bracketology, college towns in the South, and democracy at its purest form. Sounds good, doesn’t it? Garden & Gun Magazine is running a March Madness style bracket featuring 32 southern college towns ranging from the Midwest to cities along the eastern coast. Wins are determined by votes on Garden & Gun’s website in each matchup of towns. The magazine evaluated towns with populations under 315,000 people.
Athens made it to the Final Four after defeating Tallahassee, FL and in-state opponent Savannah. Athens squared off with Blacksburg, VA., the home of Virginia Tech’s campus. But those voting for Athens won’t see their town in the finals after Blacksburg advanced to the championship. Blacksburg faced Oxford, MS, and voting took place over the weekend.
Three Georgia towns were in the college bracket: Athens, Savannah, and Statesboro. All three entries were placed in the South Atlantic region along with Florida contestants Tallahassee and Gainesville and South Carolina contestants Clemson, Charleston, and Columbia.
