GBI Warns Against Phone Scam

Scammers will stop at nothing in attempt to gain personal information, and the Georgia Bureau of Investigation is experiencing that first hand.

The GBI says that there are calls coming from 404-244-2600, their main line, do not answer. Calls claim to be with the GBI collecting debt with the IRS or collecting a debt for college that will result in a warrant for their arrest if not payed.

The caller ID shows a valid number related to the GBI, when in reality the number is coming from a unknown source.

If there is any concern of a potential scam, Athens-Clarke County Police Department said to verify the identity of the person and the legitimacy of the situation before giving out personal information.

The GBI has been investigating this issue for the past month. For more on how to stay protected from scammers contact Athens Clarke County Police Department’s Crime Prevention Unit at 706-613-3358.
