ATHENS, Ga.– One of the University of Georgia’s organizations, The Union, held a presidential debate viewing party in the Tate theater. More students than the organization expected and planned for showed up.

Students from both political parties came together to watch the debate in the same room. Even with their political differences, everyone agreed that millennials need to vote. This year more than ever because it is such a big election year.

Last nights debate was one for the books. Nearly 100 million people watched Republican Presidential nominee Donald Trump square off with Democratic Presidential nominee Hillary Clinton. That’s just 6 percent less than this year’s Super Bowl. The debate between the republican and democratic nominees claimed all of the top 10 “what’s trending” list on Twitter throughout the night.

The 100 million viewers was a 17 percent spike over the first presidential debate between Barak Obama and Mitt Romney in 2012.

On twitter the “what’s trending” tweets ranged from #DebateNight to #TrumpSniffle to #Lester to #Braggadocious. It seemed like not only were people tuning into the debate via television, but also via social media.

Fill out our twitter poll @GradyNewsource and tune in to our live broadcast at five tonight to see why it is so important for millennials to vote.

University Union will be holding events from now until Election Day.
