Expanding lanes along Chase Street postponed

North Chase StreetMayor Nancy Denson removed a Chase Street paving project from the Athens-Clarke County Commission agenda Tuesday at the request of Commissioner Melissa Link.

For years, residents have complained that the street was not biker-friendly. The plan to repave Chase Street would reconfigure a portion of the street near Boulevard to the Athens bypass from a four-lane into a three-lane road. Reconfiguring the narrow corridor between Prince and Boulevard also was under consideration.

Unsure of cost and options, Link asked to postpone consideration of the project for a year so professional staff may study the street and make a recommendation. Still, whether Chase Street will be reconfigured is unclear.

“I think there will be some people who are probably not really happy about it, but again when the commissioner in a district comes in and makes a request the rest of the commission supports them on it”, Denson said.

Area residents will have to wait until September 2016 for the project to come under review again.
