The rain has stopped for awhile, but cisterns installed around the University of Georgia’s campus have the capacity to hold more than five hundred and fifty thousand gallons of rain water combined. The water collected from these cisterns is recycled to irrigate surrounding landscapes and help flush toilets. Kevin Kirsche, the director of UGA’s office of sustainability, says the recent rains have been positive environmentally, but this shouldn’t stop us from continuing our convervation efforts. 

“We still need to conserve water. It’s still critical in our daily lives that we make even small efforts to ‘think at the sink’ because every drop counts and we can all make minor changes in our daily lives, said Kirsche.

Kirsche says rain barrels are also an easy way to help conserve water on a residential scale… they can be purchased at local garden and outdoor centers.
