Recap of Busy Sports Weekend

ATHENS-The Cedar Shoals Boys Varsity Basketball team advanced to the Elite Eight of the AAAAA Georgia state basketball tournament by defeating Mundy’s Mill 71-52 on Saturday afternoon. The Jaguars will face Mays on Thursday afternoon at Columbus State University.

UGA Baseball impressed in its season opening weekend.  The team won its first series by taking two-out-of-three games against in-state rival Georgia Southern at Foley Field in Athens.

The Softball team continued its scorching start by sweeping all five of its games at the Disney City Classic in Orlando, Florida.  The Lady Bulldogs did not allow a single run during the tournament and now sits at 9-0 on the young season.

Men’s Basketball took a loss to Vanderbilt on Saturday afternoon in Nashville, Tennessee, 80-67.  Georgia drops to 14-11 on the season and is in significant danger of falling out of contention for the NCAA Tournament.

Later on Saturday, the GymDogs welcomed No. 1 ranked Oklahoma to Athens.  The Sooners lived up to their ranking and put together a meet that would have been tough for any team to beat.  OU did not fall once and put up plenty of high scores on its way to a win over UGA.

The Women’s Basketball team got the Bulldogs back on the winning track by knocking off rival Florida, 74-63, on Sunday afternoon at Stegeman Coliseum.
