Deputy Director of UGA Athletics Named UVA Athletic Director

Carla Williams will be leaving her position as the deputy director of athletics at the University of Georgia. She is responsible for coordinating the administration and for supporting activities of the athletic department. Williams will now be the athletic director of the University of Virginia. This makes her the first African American woman to lead an athletic department at a top conference school.

Williams first came to UGA as a student and played on the Georgia women’s basketball team from 1985-1889. She came back to work as the assistant coach from 1991-96, including teams which reached the 1995 and 1996 Final Fours and won the 1991 and 1996 SEC Championships.

Williams is originally from LaGrange, Ga. but Athens is considered home as both her children and her husband are at UGA. Williams says she does not plan to move up to Virginia until December or January.
