The Lead: Mizell Stewart On What’s Next for Local News

It was such a joy to talk to such an experienced journalist who still has faith in the industry’s success. That’s what Mizell Stewart brought to this week’s episode. He has worked in local news for 30+ years and now works as a news executive for the USA Today Network and Gannett. He came and spoke at Grady College in July 2019 for the Management Seminar for College News Editors.

This episode covers the longevity of local news and how the industry desperately needs leadership. Leadership isn’t addressed often in conversations with journalists of all kinds. However, when you boil down the proposed solutions to the industry’s problems, good leadership is what will transform the industry.

One of my favorite parts of editing the podcast is being able to pull out my favorite quote from the interview to post as a quote card on our Twitter page. It serves as a great practice for finding the best nugget of information in a larger interview. The cool thing about it, though, is that you get to listen to the whole conversation too. Score.
