“I’ll be swimming this sunday August 18th in the Tri To Beat Cancer” says Terry Ray.
Cancer survivors will have another fight on their hands this weekend. This time in a triathlon.
One of those competing is Terry Ray, a breast cancer survivor of 8 years, who is on a mission.
We caught up with her during her training.
“I went to the Northeast Georgia cancer center. Dr Morano was my doctor and now I’ve been cancer free since 2005 for almost 8 years and I have a personal motivation for doing this.”
The race begins with a 400 meter swim, into a 14 mile bike ride, and a 5K through the park.
Athletes have the option to compete individually or as relay teams, like Terry.
Entering its 4th year, the Tri To Beat Cancer Triathlon, is the only one in Athens.
Terry Ray is part of the 20 percent.
Executive director of Cancer Foundation for Northeast Georgia, Kimberly Liebowitz, says the race has raised 268,000 dollars over the past 3 years, and expects to raise close to 80,000 dollars this Sunday.
Almost everyone is doing it in memory or honor of someone that is part of their registration that they can fill out. It’s pretty neat when they cross the finish line and it says, ‘I’m doing this in honor of my mom and she’s standing right there.'”
Terry says cancer was the fight of her life, but that the swim in the triathlon will be no easy task.
“I’ve been training for about a month and hope I won’t drown.”
