Young Gun Lockleer Leading Tigers in State Basketball Playoffs

Commerce High School basketball is seeing its greatest success in years, largely due to junior guard Essien Lockleer. Lockleer did not begin his basketball career until he entered high school, but this did not stop him.

As a two-sport athlete and a wide receiver for Commerce football, Lockleer’s athleticism has translated seamlessly to the hardwood, bringing speed, strength and energy on both ends of the floor.

Lockleer began his basketball career playing mostly defense, but now he leads the team in points per game. Head coach Sherrard Brantley, a former University of Georgia basketball player, says Lockleer has quickly become a leader on the team.

“All of a sudden everything else just started to happen,” Brantley said. “I got steals, I got rebounds, I got assists, I got scoring [from Lockleer].”

Like, there ain’t much he can’t do.”

Commerce continues its playoff run Wednesday on the road against Vidalia in the third round of the 1A Division I tournament with a berth in the Final Four on the line.

Rhett Morgan and Faith Stokes are students in the undergraduate certificate program in the Carmical Sports Media Institute at UGA.
