When you think of a garden, you likely envision a lot of green. The Athens Regional Library unveiled its own garden in April of 2024; however, it wasn’t the traditional green but a solar garden.

As Athens-Clarke County moves toward its 100% clean energy goal for the year 2035, it has greenlit several different solar energy projects, with the solar garden being one of the latest.

It’s a garden of seven solar panels, which took the place of some trees in the library’s parking lot, that are now providing 20 percent of the energy needs for the library.

This project was put in place to help save the library and the community money. Yet, the project isn’t quite providing the savings intended due to the installation of two level-three electric vehicle chargers, which have proven more popular than many thought.
