Athens, Ga-

The Oconee Co. Sheriff says around 9 pm last night, the Cheverolet truck left the road and hit a highway sign before hitting a tree. Two men were killed. The driver, John David Edwards had two young kids and was a school bus driver.

Brenda Colley, a friend of John Edwards, says, “It’s really sad to see somebody go through this when they have kids involved.”

36-year old Edwards and Brenda Colley’s daughter were both bus drivers. He helped around their house and became a close family friend.

“His kids come over there and play with my grandkids, so one of the little girls started calling me Grandmother,” says Colley.

The other victim was 23-year-old Stephen Marlow. The fatal accident happened on the 1100 block of Hale Road. All you can see of the accident is a small car part. What was left of the truck was towed and taken to Doster’s Garage. Sheriff Scott Berry arrived on the scene 15 minutes after the call.

Berry says, “The state patrol is investigating this case, but from my observation the pick up truck and two occupants left the roadway at what appeared to be a high rate of speed killing them instantly.”

Georgia State Patrol says that the two victims did not have drugs or alcohol in their system nor was there bad weather on the roads, but they did say that they were not wearing any seat belts.

Colley’s daughter was the one who notified John’s girlfriend, Deena, of the his death and said she took the news harder than his parents did.

“My daughter said she was like a zombie just spacey, out of it, just tore up about it,” says Colley.

There is no update on a funeral date just yet but Brenda Colley said she and her family will be attending.
