Severe thunderstorms that have been pummeling the middle of the country have reached Georgia, which could lead to heavy rainfall, flooding, damaging winds and brief tornadoes.

The storm started midday Sunday in North Georgia and is expected to end Monday after 6 p.m. Most areas will get between one to 2 inches of rain, with isolated areas getting up to 3 inches, according to WSB-TV.

What does this mean for UGA students?

The University of Georgia is warning students about the severity of the storm. Students starting class on Monday woke up to notifications from the university warning of tornadoes that could impact the area.

UGA Transportation and Parking Services posted on social media to update students on the delays they would experience throughout the day. UGA Transportation and Parking Services warned students that bus services were suspended from 8:36 a.m. and resumed at 8:55 a.m. due to the inclement weather.

What does this mean for the Athens area?

The Athens-Clarke County area is currently classified as being at major risk of flooding, according to the First Street Flood Model. First Street estimates that 8 percent of properties are projected to be particularly affected by heavy rains.

What is a flood watch?

The U.S. National Weather Service issued a flood watch for Metro Atlanta and Athens communities from 8 a.m. Sunday to 8 p.m. Monday. According to the National Weather Service, a flood watch “is issued when conditions are favorable for flooding.”

The watch warns people to be prepared in case of hazardous conditions, emphasizing that a flood watch “does not mean flooding will occur, but it is possible.”

What can I do to make sure I’m safe?

Due to the range of weather conditions all over Georgia, it is advised to check your area on the National Weather Service website to see the warnings and watches issued.

Thanks for this helpful information. I can never remember the difference between a watch and a warning.
