Lottie Smalley’s Youtube ‘Side Hustle’ is Also a Career Move

Lottie Smalley, a junior public relations major at the University of Georgia, is a Youtube content creator.

Why It’s Newsworthy: The digital landscape has changed enough to where users on Youtube can have a sustainable career, earning up to six figures.

Lottie Smalley started making Youtube videos in 2012 and has gained 74,000 subscribers since her start.

Smalley considers Youtube as a “side hustle,” and primarily focuses on her studies in public relations. She hopes to work on the other side of the sponsorships and brand campaigns.

Through brand deals and sponsorships, she is able to make a steady income and travel. Dr. Keith Herndon, director of the Cox Media Institute and professor of journalism, believes that the media shift can allow for a long-term sustainable career on Youtube’s platform.

Abby Stolz and Hailey Ahn are seniors majoring in journalism in the Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication at the University of Georgia.
