The Lead is a podcast hosted and produced by Charlotte Norsworthy in the Cox Institute for Journalism Innovation, Management & Leadership at the University of Georgia. We talk about how to get ahead in the media industry by interviewing the people who did.
This episode of The Lead was the first time I conducted a full interview using only a mobile recording kit. I used a Zoom recorder with two mics and a pair of headphones that came with my cellphone. When the interview miraculously went off without a hitch, it was exciting to be reminded that podcasting can take place wherever you are (even if that means getting stopped at airport security because your backpack is crammed with recording gear).
The interview took place in Austin, Texas, which is pretty ironic considering Tracy Brown is the deputy managing editor at the Atlanta Journal-Constitution and is typically in close proximity to the University of Georgia. However, our schedules ended up lining up perfectly at the Online News Association conference, where I recorded my compilation episode from a few weeks ago.
Tracy and I talked about newsroom leadership development, a topic that is well-known but never really talked about in news organizations. She shared some thoughts on what makes a good leader in news and the power of new perspectives.
