UGA Women’s Golf Prepares for Postseason with Liz Murphey Collegiate Classic

The University of Georgia women’s golf team hopes to gain momentum this weekend at the 47th Liz Murphey Collegiate Classic. The team is winless in the regular season for the first time since 2013-2014. The Liz Murphey will give the Bulldogs one last chance to win in the regular season before going into postseason play.

“We need to get some momentum on our side,” head coach Josh Brewer said. “We’re close, and why not start it at home.”

Georgia has won the team title at the Liz Murphey 14 times. The team has had a player win the individual trophy 12 times.

Rinko Mitsunaga is the lone senior on the Bulldogs’ roster this year, and has competed in the Liz Murphey all four seasons. Mitsunaga will take the course with three freshmen and one junior. She said even though the Bulldogs have a young team, they’re all familiar with the course, and they know what to expect.

“I know our team has put in a ton of work the last few days, so I’m just excited to see that show and shine for everyone,” Mitsunaga said.

The Bulldogs will face off against 11 other teams, including three teams ranked in the top-10 in the country. The Bulldogs will see Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Ole Miss and South Carolina in back-to-back weeks as they head to the Southeastern Conference Championships next weekend.

Georgia, and the five other SEC teams, will use this weekend to prepare for the SEC Championships next weekend, which has the same format as the Liz Murphey. Brewer said the Liz Murphey is planned strategically to allow teams to get used to the match-play format before postseason play.

“It gives us a great chance just to go through everything that can occur a week from now,” Brewer said. “We’re playing for stakes even bigger in the postseason.”
