Athens, GA — Severe weather crippled much of northwest Georgia Tuesday morning. Isolated tornadoes on the radar, strong winds and heavy rain prompted a tornado warning for Athens and Oconee Counties until 7:45 A.M.
The University of Georgia issued a severe weather warning to students. It told students to “seek shelter indoors immediately. Proceed to the lowest level of the building. Stay off phones to enable you to receive additional emergency instructions.”
Students on UGA’s campus were sent to secure locations during the tornado warning, like the above photo that was taken at Oglethorpe Dining Commons by student Brandon Vassar.
The university issued an all-clear around 7:45 when the tornado warning expired but told all students to “be cautious in returning to your normal activities” and to report any injuries, gas or chemical smells or damage to buildings.
This does not mean that severe weather is definitively over. There is a secondary front expected to push through our area around 1PM today. Student meteorologist Michael Stewart said, “although the primary threat from the next front is strong and isolated winds, isolated and strong storms may redevelop along the new front. The chance for tornado development has decreased, but we simply can’t rule out an isolated event.”
