Armed Robberies on Rise in Athens

ATHENS — An armed robbery occurred on April 10 between 5-5:40 p.m, according to the Athens-Clarke County Police Department.

The victim told police he was held by one man who had a knife in his hand, meanwhile the 5 or 6 other men kicked and punched him until the victim blacked out. This incident occurred on Springdale Street. The victim reported that he was robbed of $40 in cash and a gift card.

Of the 19 robberies reported in the last month, 10 of these were armed robberies.

After looking through the reports, there did not seem to be a universal time frame that these robberies were occurring. The time of the occurrences happened anywhere from two o’clock in the afternoon to two o’clock in the morning.

To better protect yourself and to lessen your chances of becoming victimized in situations like these, the University of Georgia Police Department recommends the following tips:

  • Always travel in groups when possible
  • Always be aware of your surroundings
  • Always travel in well-lit areas when possible
  • Never display cash or other valuables in public
  • If consuming alcohol, consume responsibly and moderately
  • Report suspicious activity or individuals to law enforcement immediately
