Ignore ‘Throw Away’ on Silica Gel Packets: Here’s Why

In big bold letters is “Throw Away” on the little packets you find in new shoes and clothes. But those silica gel packets can be used for much more than people think.

The best use of those little packets is to absorb moisture and fix water damage. This can help to improve razor sharpness by preventing rust that is caused by moisture.

“Silica is great for moisture, but the problem is it’s a desiccant that doesn’t change color when it’s full with water. So you never know if you can still use it,” said Donald Suggs, a UGA Chemistry Professor (a desiccant is a substance that absorbs water).

Other uses include eliminating odors and for cat litter. So if you happen to drop your phone in water, instead of using a bag of rice, try a bag of silica gel. Experts say it might just do the trick.
