Twelve million pounds, that sounds like a lot of food, but the Food Bank of North East Georgia says, that still is not enough.

In the North-East Georgia area, one in four people struggle with hunger, compared to one-in-five in the entire state. The food bank of North-East Georgia, is trying to change that. They are a distribution center that works with over two-hundred and thirty agencies and organizations in the area such as local churches, the YMCA, and Project Safe to get the food to those in need

Bill Taylor, Volunteer Manager, “They know what the immdediate needs are in their local counties and they’re the ones that get the food out to those indiiduals that are food insecure and families that are food insecure.”

To get more people aware of the problem of hunger in the community, the food bank is pushing a social media campaign for the month of Septemeber, which has been named “Hunger Action Month.” Each Day, the organization is posting a well-known person in the community on their social media outlets, promoting awareness. So far, well known community memebers include former drummer of R-E-M, Bill Berry, and Athen’s mayor, Nancy Denson.

Susan Dodson, Director of External Relations says, ” People dont know about the issues we have. One in three children in Clarke County are considered food insecure, which means they dont know where their next meal will come from.”
