Ed Benson was a successful business man and volunteer in the Athens community. He passed away March 31 from a concussion. Benson was 96. He is remembered for his dedication to UGA and the Athens community.

Benson graduated from the University of Georgia in 1942. Benson Hall, in the Terry College of Business is dedicated to him and his father. He served as a second lieutenant in the Army Air Corps during World War II before returning to Athens to work at his family’s bakery and attend graduate school.

Benson spent his life serving Athens. He was the President of Rotary Club of Athens and became the youngest District Governor of Rotary International at the time. He also helped fundraising for other organizations like The Boys and Girls Club of Athens and the YMCA. He cofounded the Listen, Learn, and Lead group which addressed issues within the Athens community.

The memorial service is Thursday, April 1 at 1:00 p.m. at Athens First Methodist Church.

Instead of flowers they are asking for donations to be made to the Benson Community Fund at the Athens Area Community Foundation, PO Box 1543, Athens, GA 30603.
