An Historic Election for Gainesville

-Gainesville, GA

It’s a historic election day for one Northeast Georgia town. We have team coverage for you tonight of the mayoral race in Gainesville. The candidates feel confident about their chances of winning this race. That’s good but only one will end up in the mayor’s seat.

Candidate Rose Johnson says the Gainesville mayoral race is an exciting moment in the city’s history.

She says, “The winds of change are blowing here.  New things are happening and this election in its historic nature will change in many ways.”

The candidates say they’re proud of their get-out-to-vote measures. Candidate Danny Dunagan says he has friends and family answering calls and emails. He says, “We”re relying on a lot of friends. I had a friend call me awhile ago and he was sending emails to all his people that he knows inside the city to get out and vote.”

Candidate Charles Alvarez is helping his own cause by standing the corner of intersections waving his own signs. He argues that it’s important for people to vote in this race.

“It’s a privilege that we have. There’s a lot of countries in the world that don’t have this privilege and thank God we’re one of the best countries in the whole world…not one of the best…the best country in the whole world. This is one of the privileges that we have…that we can do”, he says.

We tried to reach the fourth candidate in this race, Debra Harkrider but were unsuccessful.
