Morton’s Shoe Fire

Madison, GA

The family of one of Athens’ favorite business owners wonders what they’ll do next after losing nearly everything in a house fire yesterday.

The owner of Morton’s shoes and his wife and three children are homeless after a fire destroyed their house yesterday.

The smoke still rises from the fire that took everything yesterday morning. Scattered video tapes, a few clothes, and barely recognizable old ‘sixty five Mustang stand among the rubble that remains for the Eberhart family…

This is particularly painful after Mrs. Eberhart’s mother died just 9 days earlier. Her brother Doug looks over the lost memories.

Not even the plastic play house across the yard survived the flames. A house used by their three children still at home and many of the 25 foster children who came through these doors over the years.

Those memories also, gone to the flames.

This shoe repairman is doing what he knows best. He’s pulling up his boot straps and trying to put things back together.

But he won’t have to do it alone. He says he’s been overwhelmed by the support of the community.
