Cemetery Markers Creating Backlash

Winder, GA – A Winder widow is raising concern over new section markers at a publicly funded cemetery. Charisse Lackey told our reporter Andrew James a street department contractor put in the stakes too high and that they are offensive to the cemetery.

“Remove the white post and the blue signs, use the granite, make some very inconspicuous granite markers that would have no maintenence and would last a lifetime,” Lackey said.

The posts are over four feet high, white, with plastic tips and blue reflective signage. They are also within feet of people’s graves. Lackey spoke at last week’s city council meeting about her displeasure with the new posts.

Mayor David Maynard says the public works department has stopped putting in the posts but not before the ones current ones were put in.

“It is by no means complete and I think that this is a good time to back up and start over,” Mayor Maynard said.

At this time, the public works department has not set up a timetable to remove the posts and replace them.
