Expansion of Athens Clarke County Landfill

Athens, GA – A local church says the smell and expansion of the Athens Clarke County Landfill is affecting its church. A representative from the church spoke at the County Commission Meeting this week about how nothing is being done to help the church and nearby residents deal with the landfill. But the Solid Waste department says the landfill was there first. Reporter Briana Belser talked with a member of the church who is personally affected by the landfill.

Toxic sites often are disproportionately placed near poor people and minorities. This story of the east-side church and the sewage-sludge operation next door hasn’t been covered elsewhere. Nice job!
