Local Communities Respond to Harvey Relief Efforts

Houston, Texas, and its surrounding areas may be more than 800 miles away, but it isn’t stopping Northeast Georgian’s from asking how they can help.
Oconee County Sheriff’s Office
On Wednesday, August 30, the Oconee County Sheriff’s Office sent out a Facebook message asking for people to bring supplies to be sent to hurricane victims in Texas. Within 24 hours, the community began to show up, bringing the listed items Oconee County Sheriff’s Office noted in their Facebook message.
The parking lot was packed with diapers, water bottles, toothpaste, canned goods, dog food, medical supplies, among many other items.
Fortunately, it wasn’t just partners with Oconee County Sheriff’s Office who volunteered, both young and old showed showed up with supplies in hand.
Molly Ann McLean was one of many to show up, including her mother and brother, Baxter. McLean said she has a soft spot in her heart for the other girls her age in Texas.
“I want to help the babies and all the children,” said Molly Ann McLean.
But, there were so many supplies donated that the Sheriff’s Office began filling up a second truck trailer to send to Hurricane Harvey victims in Texas.
Northeast Georgia Red Cross
The Northeast Georgia Red Cross has deployed 9 people to Houston to help with Harvey relief efforts, but will stop sending volunteers for now because of the potential threat of Tropical Storm Irma, which could hit part of the East Coast.
The Red Cross said it could be kept very busy by this active hurricane season, and its first responsibility to the people of Northeast Georgia.
UGA Student Government Association
The University of Georgia Student Government Association is holding a collection drive from now until September 15.
The drive will be taking place inside of the Center for Leadership and Service on the second floor in the Tate Student Center.
Items that are being asked for are non-perishable food items and basic hygiene products.
