JEFFERSON — A three-year-old died from a gun shot wound yesterday, according to a media release from the Georgia Bureau of Investigation.

Police officers from the Jefferson Police Department arrived at Fairfield Drive and found the injured toddler outside of his home with adults trying to help him.

It was reported to the police that the child accidentally shot himself with a handgun.

Jackson County EMS took the child to the Athens Regional Medical Center, where he later died.

The child’s body was taken to the GBI Crime Lab.

The GBI Athens Office along with the Jefferson Police Department, the Jackson County Coroner’s Office and the Jackson County Department of Family and Children’s Services are investigating the incident further.

After all of the facts have been received, the District Attorney’s Office will review the case.
