Athens, Ga- The Athens-Clarke County Police Department received a 250,000 dollar grant for DUI enforcement. Reporter Didi Abdulnabi spoke with Traffic supervisor Lieutenant Don Eckert and he says the Athens-Clarke County Police Department will use some of their grant money to purchase 3 new police cars with the acronym H.E.A.T. decal on them. H.E.A.T. stands for Highway Enforcement of Aggressive Traffic. These cars will be used to help prevent DUI’s and DUI related wrecks and deaths. Monitoring DUI will be much easier as the police will set up in saturated areas. This just a few of the new strategies that will be implemented through the grant to the police department. The money for the grant is from the state government and they preferred the dark blue colors of the cars. The grant is referred to as the HEAT Grant. In addition to the new cars being added, 3 new police personnel will be added as well. Eckert was also getting prices today and ordering more equipment to help watch for DUI. DUI’s are trending down as more transportation sources are available to those who are under the influence. Nearly half of the deaths that occur in wrecks are due to different cases of DUI.
