Reed Hall Is Giving An Interactive Underground Railroad Tour

Athens, GA – UGA’s Reed Hall is giving campus and the athens community a look at the underground rail road through the eyes of a slave.

Glory Bound is an interactive guided tour of the underground railroad. The event starts in the lobby of Reed and tourists are guided throughout the resident hall to different stations by students dressed as conductors. Along the way they will learn about different slave codes and how stars were used by slaves to find their way to freedom. Resident hall director Nakeisha Randall says she hopes the event will get people thinking.

“We’re hoping that this program will get people to start thinking about what people went through in that time period and what their fight was and struggle was,” Randall said. “Hopefully that will help us enjoy our freedom even more.”

The tour consists of different stations, participants will receive a journey bag, see a timeline of slavery, learn about different slave codes & debrief. The program is in it’s fifth year and has seen an increased in people due do an expansion of off campus promotion.

“We do have to accommodate every year for the number of people,so we’ve changed our route a little bit to make sure groups don’t run into each other and to make sure that the flow is a little bit better, but we are always welcoming the large number of people,” Randall said.

Glory Bound will take place Wednesday February 20th in Reed Hall from 6 to 8pm. Anyone is welcome to stop by within that time frame for a 20 minute tour.
