Oconee County’s Veterans Day Memorial

Anthems playing… Flags flying… Veterans saluting… Friends and family arriving to give their thanks. This was the scene at the Oconee Hill Cemetery this morning.

Athens natives and coordinators of the Annual Veteran’s Day Observance, Jane Begnaud and Helen Mills, believe this event is important because there are Veterans from every war buried in the cemetery and many of the members have family who have served and are veterans.

UGA Alumni, Major Jerry Cushenberry, gave the Veteran’s Day address and was introduced by his number one role model. He explained, “When they were trying to come up with who should introduce me, I couldn’t suggest a higher and more distinguished gentleman than my old man.”

By the end of Cushenberry’s address, it was apparent that he and his Dad share a deep bond.

The observance wrapped up on a sweet note, with the sounds of the national anthem ringing in the air.
