In Northeast Georgia, friendly competition is fueling a big impact. Food insecurity remains a pressing issue not only in Athens but across Northeast Georgia. Thousands of residents are impacted everyday and face challenges of getting food on the table.

Every October, the Northeast Georgia Food Bank hosts their annual Hunger Bowl, a monthlong competition between organizations, clubs and businesses across 15 counties to collect food and funds for those in need.

With a goal of $50,000 this year, Northeast Georgia Food Bank Relationship Manager Colson Holt said the goal is the same this year.

Community members are encouraged to donate or to contribute online. Members have currently raised over $7,500 so far. Over 17,000 Athens-Clarke County residents were facing food insecurity, according to Feeding America. But most recently in 2023, that number has risen to 23,310 residents in 2024. Low-income families are impacted by this as grocery costs continue to increase.

A public issue such as food insecurity, the Hunger Bowl is a great way to help build a stronger, healthier community. Without reliable access to healthy foods, families and residents face negative health risks such as chronic illnesses, growth and long-term developments.

Events like the Hunger Bowl highlight the power of awareness and community collaboration to fight toward a common cause such as food insecurity.
