Kicking off the holidays in Athens this year is the annual Downtown Parade of Lights, but before the parade, floats and other acts must register with ACC to make the spectacle possible.
“It’s so much fun. It’s fun not only for the kids but for the kids at heart!” said Athens-Clarke County Gymnastics Program Specialist Tina Callaway.
The event brings together local businesses, performers and athletes with its bright lights and, this year, music since the theme is officially “Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree”.
“By no means are we like the Atlanta or the Macy’s parade BUT for a small town, it is a BEAUTIFUL parade,” said Callaway, “Just to see the lights in downtown Athens and everyone coming together.”
The reason varies for why locals want to participate in the parade. Some register for prize money and bragging rights. Others just want to connect with the community on a more personal level.
“It gives us a chance to get engaged with the community and let them know of the work we do in a creative, fun way,” said Athens Habitat for Humanity Outreach Director Bridget Sivewright.
To join the fun, submit your organization’s paperwork, a rough draft of what your float will look like, and a check for $40 in person or by mail to the Athens-Clarke County Leisure Services office.
The deadline to register to participate is November 16 at 5 p.m.
