Athens-Clarke: Alcohol Ordinance Passes After Months of Legislation

In an effort to end discrimination in Athens-Clarke County, the alcohol license ordinance passed at Tuesday night’s Mayor and Commission Meeting.

Mayor Nancy Denson has asked her “staff” to look into resources that are available to victims of discrimination in Athens and she wants these listings no later than July 1st, the start of the 2017 fiscal year.

“Good legislation doesn’t happen overnight,” said Mayor Denson but she was optimistic about last night saying, “I think what we did last night was thoughtful, good legislation.”

A citizen-input amendment was rejected causing 2 refraining votes, one “no” and six “yes”. The only businesses that are specifically addressed in the ordinance are bars and the dress codes associated with each one and private parties that keep people out of bars in Athens.

“I think some of the people that came forward were under some misconception to what was and wasn’t being proposed.”

Mayor Denson says this is a stepping stone to ending discrimination and the community has a great impact on what happens in Athens-Clarke County government.

“I hope it’s going to send a message to the community that discrimination in any form is looked on with any acceptance from the mayor and commission. Athens-Clarke County is an inclusive community.”
