Congratulations — Clarke Central High School

Students at Clarke Central High School have been recognized by the Georgia Scholastic Press Association as some of the best in the state for their work on various news magazines and their “new” TV broadcast.  We want to recognize them and from the award-winning students at Grady Newsource want to say congratulations to the award-winning students at Clarke Central.

And from the Executive Producers of Grady Newsource a special shout out and kudos to the one who makes it all possible.  David Ragsdale semi single-handedly guides the student productions… working with them…. coaching them… coaxing them… leading them… teaching them… and — just as we executive producers would say about our students as well — learning with them and from them.

Here is the official statement:

The Georgia Scholastic Press Association released annual awards today via an online broadcast.  The event was rewarding for members of Clarke Central’s Iliad Literary-Art Magazine, Odyssey Online, ODTV and Odyssey Newsmagazine.

The 2013-14 Odyssey was recognized as GSPA’s All Georgia Newsmagazine (highest honors); the publication was recognized as All Georgia for the sixth time in seven years (2008, 2009, 2011, 2012, 2013 and 2014).  The Odyssey received the General Excellence award for the ninth consecutive year, as well as a Superior rating.  The Iliad Literary-Art Magazine for 2012-13 received the General Excellence award and a Superior rating- a repeat of 2013’s evaluations.  The Odyssey Online website received the 2013-14 General Excellence News Website award and was rated All Georgia (highest honors) for two consecutive years.

Also of note, Odyssey Editor-in-Chief Jenny Alpaugh was named Georgia Champion Journalist.  Jenny follows Bryan Barks (2009), Kinsey Clark (2011), and Carlo Nasisse (2012) as Odyssey winners.  Odyssey PR Manager Austin Defoor was named 3rd place runner up in Georgia Champion Journalist competition.  Austin follows Champion Journalist Runners Up Julia K. Wilson (2005), Rachel Bowers (2007), Lisa Glaser (2008), Caroline Foster (2009), Isabel Atkinson (2010), Lauren Pruitt (2011), Emma Kissane (2012) and Chloe Hargrave (2013).

Additionally, Odyssey News Editor Aaron Holmes was named Junior Champion Journalist for Georgia, which follows Kinsey Clark (2010) and Jenny Alpaugh (2013) as previous winners, and Features Editor Louise Platter placed third, which follows runner up Emma Kissane (2011).

“After 11 years of Odyssey and 13 years of the Iliad, our Leadership Team continues to challenge our staff members to grow, expand and evolve.  Under the leadership of Ethan Crane and his team on the Iliad and Jenny Alpaugh, Geneva Hinkle, Porter McLeod and Susanna Conine-Nakano on the Odyssey and Odyssey Online, we adjusted to new work parameters and continued to adapt our creative process,”  adviser David Ragsdale said.

On behalf of the students, thank you for your ongoing interest and support.  A comprehensive list of awards follows…
