Consent Rally Held at Georgia Arch

A sexual consent rally took to the streets Saturday night at the UGA Arch in response to another rally that was supposed to meet there.

Earlier in the week the “neomasculine” blog,” Return of Kings, gained international attention for proposing meetups around the world to promote men’s rights and their ultra conservative beliefs on gender roles.  Outrage began when many interpreted the message to be pro rape.  As a result of the backlash the proposed meetups were getting, on February 3 the blog’s found, Roosh Valizadeh, canceled the meetups.

In Athens, students and locals met one hour before the supposed “pro-rape” meetup was to occur at the Arch, advocating consent instead.

First year student and International Affairs major, Brewer Kunnemann, was one of a handful of men in attendance.  Like many students in attendance, he could have been doing other things on a Saturday night, but for Kunnemann, the message of consent is important.  “The fact of the matter is, some people are being oppressed or subjugated, or some people are advocating for the suppression or oppression of people’s rights and that doesn’t sit well with me.”

The group hopes that with their demonstration will spread a better message to people downtown Saturday night, and ward away any possible people coming to advocate Roosh Valizadeh’s message.
