E-SPLOST initiative Passed

Citizens voted in favor of the E-SPLOST initiative and the result could be an increase in the number of schools in Barrow and Oconee counties.  The E-SPLOST will allow for one percent of local sales tax to go towards building more schools and retiring bond debts. 65% percent of voters were in favor of the initiative.  At the state level, two constitutional amendments passed as well as a statewide referendum. The state General Assembly can no longer increase the maximum state income tax rate. Voters also supported a consititutional amendment to allow additional penalties for reckless driving to be added to the Brain and Spinal Injury Trust Fund. This fund pays for services needed by Georgia citizens suffering from spinal cord injuries. And lastly, a state referendum passed allowing the University System of Georgia’s property to remain tax exempt.
