While the Kirby Smart football era kicked off on Saturday, there was another kick-off today.
The Students for Environmental Action and Sustainable UGA are teaming up to host events all week to promote this year’s Earth Week. The kickoff for Earth Week concluded two o’ clock this afternoon, but there are plenty of events still to attend.
Here are the Earth Week events:
TODAY
Group Bike Ride, 6-7PM: Bikers will meet at the University of Georgia Tate Plaza and take a scenic bike ride around Athens.
Check the Signs, 7-9PM: Check the Signs is a local, family musical group that released its debut album “Along the Way” in 2014. Check the Signs will perform on the Georgia Theatre Rooftop.
TUESDAY
Green Gigs: Inspiring Careers in Sustainability Panel, 4-5:30PM: A discussion panel and networking session featuring leaders from Coca-Cola, Georgia Power, the City of Atlanta government, the National Wildlife Federation, the EPA, and the Terry College of Business. The panel will take place at the Miller Learning Center Reading Room. Refreshments will be provided.
Watershed UGA: Tanyard Creek Clean-Up, 5-7PM: Participants will meet at the entrance gate to the Tate parking deck and from there head to Tanyard Creek to clean the Athens creek.
WEDNESDAY
Daylighting Lily: Watershed UGA, 12-3PM: There will be a series of events hosted on East Campus, all starting at noon. Participants can learn how to conduct a pH test by the Lamar Dodd School of Art. Additionally, students can participate in a geocache, which is described as a fun way to interact with our watershed, learn how people are working to improve watershed health, and collect rare stickers. Lastly, a dye test will be administered in all buildings on East Campus to track where all the waste goes.
Yoga Under the Stars, 8-9:30PM: A free community yoga class for all ages and levels will be held outside, after sunset at Myers Quad on the University of Georgia campus. The class will be led by Maleah from Rubber Soul Yoga studio. It is requested that participants bring their own mat or towel. Tea and coffee will be provided after the class.
THURSDAY
Run for the River, 12PM: Runners will meet at the corner of Hull Street and Baxter Street, which is the home of the Chew Crew, a herd of goats that remove invasive species from Tanyard Creek. The run will be approximately three miles and it will go at a leisurely, conversational pace. The main places the run goes by includes the Driftmier woods, Piedmont forest, and Lumpkin woods.
The Big Read: Nature Writing Guided by Robinson Jeffers, 5-6:30PM: Participants will be guided on a tour of the International Garden in the State Botanical Garden of Georgia. After that, College of Education professor Melissa Cahnmann-Taylor will lead an indoor writing activity, using the works of Robinson Jeffers to spark inspiration.
The Big Read: ‘Georgia Review’ Earth Day Celebration, 7PM: Internationally recognized essayist and poet, Allison Hawthorne Deming, will read from her own work at the State Botanical Garden of Georgia’s Visitor’s Center.
South by South Milledge, 5-8PM: The event will be held at the Lower Barn at UGArden. It is a $3 entry fee, but event-goers will dance to local bands and eat food provided by Taziki’s, Mama’s Boy, Heirloom Cafe, and others. It is requested that those who attend bring their own plates, bowls and utensils.
FRIDAY- EARTH DAY

Rooftop Garden Workday, 2-4PM: Geography Building Rooftop Garden.
UGA Chew Crew Workday, time TBD: Driftmier Woods.
Athens Land Trust Farm/Garden Workday, Location and time TBD.
UGArdan Farm Workday, 2-5PM: UGArden.
Lunchbox Garden Project, 3:30-4:30PM: Barnett Shoals Elementary School.
Campus Kitchens & Spoon University present DIVE! The Film, 6-8PM: DIVE! is a documentary about filmmaker Jeremy Seifert and others as they gather thousands of pounds of edible food from Los Angeles dumpsters. Refreshments will be provided.
SATURDAY
The Big Read: ‘Another Kid’s Treasure Island’ by Children’s Theatre Troupe, 10-11:15AM: An original play written by Kelsey Brown, a junior communication sciences and disorders and theater major. Her play idea won her the UGA Sustainability + Arts Grant award. Admission is $5 and will be performed by the UGA Children’s Theater Troupe.
Middle Oconee River Clean-Up, 11AM-2PM: Paddle down the Middle Oconee River to remove trash, tires and other waste. Paddlers will meet at Big Dogs on the River and will be treated to a Barberitos burrito picnic. Spots are limited and registration and a printed ticket are required.
Farm to Tap, 4:30-7:30PM: To wrap up the week, six chefs will cook creative dishes on-site at Terrapin Brewery using fresh produce grown by local family farms. Tickets are limited and should be purchased ahead of time.
